Goose Island is back as Beer of the Month at Taco Mac for June of 2018. I’m a big fan of this brewery, as I think they brew some truly amazing beers. Not all of them are great, but a lot of them are, and thought they are criticized for their Anheuser-Busch Inbev affiliation, I think they brew better beer than a lot of small craft brewers out there.
Tonight, I’m trying their new (to me anyway) session IPA: Goose Island Midway IPA. Session IPAs had pretty much run their course as a fad I thought, but I am starting to see a few pop up here and there again. Midway IPA is one of them.
Goose Island says:
Paying tribute to the city we call home, Midway IPA is sessionable and refreshing, or as we like to refer to it - easy drinking. With a lower ABV, balanced IBU’s, and a tropical fruit aroma, make Midway your new go-to, have more than one, easy drinking IPA.
Ingredients, from the website:
Hops: Cascade, Ekuanot, Millennium, Mt. Hood, Pekko, Zythos
Malts: Pale
Goose Island Midway IPA has an alcohol content of 4.6% by volume with 30
IBUs. I paid $5.75 for a 23-ounce mug at Taco Mac and got a free glass
with it. It will run you $9.99 a six-pack in cans.
My mug of Goose Island Midway IPA arrived a bright orange amber color with a moderate head of foam and zesty grapefruit in the nose. Taking a sip, the beer has medium malt and plenty of vibrant grapefruit rind and resin in the palate. It’s finished off with a lingering bitter finish.
Judged against other beers in the session IPA style I have tasted (and how else can you judge a beer?), Goose Island Midway IPA is a winner for me. It’s the hops that make the difference here, classic resiny piney citrusy hops. I didn’t get the tropical fruit aroma, and I’m happy about that. I’d buy this one again for that very reason.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
