Here’s a beer that’s a mystery to me: Good People Kettle Sour Gose. I’m thinking it’s a specialty brew made especially for Taco Mac by Good People of Birmingham, Alabama. I say this because:
· Good People is the featured brewery of the month at Taco Mac
· I drank this beer at Taco Mac
· I’ve never seen it before
· There is no mention of the beer on the Good People website
· All of the Untappd check-ins are at Taco Mac
That’s a good enough case for me, folks. Gose, of course, is quite popular these days as “the latest thing” in craft brewing. It is a wheat beer with origins in Goslar, Germany (hence the name) and is brewed with coriander and salt. American versions are more sour than the original German examples available. To be fair, Ritterguts Gose has a puckering sourness; Leipziger Gose is less sour.
Taco Mac says the beer has 4% alcohol by volume. Untappd says it has 5 IBUs. I paid $6.75 for a glorious 23-ounce fill at Taco Mac.
My mug of Good People Kettle Sour Gose arrived a cloudy yellow color with a light head of creamy foam and an appetizing sour nose that hints at coriander. Taking a sip I got crackery wheat, an intense tartness, a hint of the coriander spice, a light saltiness and a puckering sour finish.
This beer was delightful, just what I want in a Gose. The saltiness should not be overbearing and it was not here, and I enjoyed the immense start and sour character. Well done, Good People! You should brew this again and, next time, don’t hide it so well.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
