Good people drink good beer; Hunter S. Thompson said that. If you go to Birmingham, Alabama you’ll also find that good people make good beer. I’m talking about the Good People brewing company, of course, and I mentioned the above when I tried my first beer from Good People, Good People Coffee Oatmeal Stout. The brewery plays off Thompson’s statement with their tagline “Be good people, drink great beer.”
Tonight, I’m trying my second beer from Good People: Good People IPA. Like the Coffee Oatmeal Stout, Good People IPA is sold in cans and is part of the brewery’s regular lineup. I enjoyed a can on July 3rd, celebrating the weekend of the 4th, and the red, white, and blue can certainly seemed apropos that day.
From the website:
Our unfiltered, dryhopped IPA packs a copper-colored aromatic punch. Herbal and earthy hops take center stage, tempered by light caramel flavors. Crisp and refreshing, it’s a hop lover’s dream.
Ingredients, also from the website:
Hops: Columbus, Willamette, Cascade, Simcoe, Citra
Malts: 2-Row and 5 Specialty Malts
Yeast: California Ale
Good People IPA has an alcohol content of 7.1% by volume with 76 IBUs and was running $9.99 a six-pack in Tennessee where I found it.
Good People IPA pours to a beautiful orange amber color with a thick creamy head of foam and an enticing resiny pine nose. A thick layer of Brussels Lace forms on the sides of my glass and follows the liquid all the way to the bottom. Taking a sip, I love the caramel malt up front here, full and luxurious over the tongue. Then the hops hit, piney and resiny and citric grapefruit with bitter grapefruit rind. Ends long and dry and very bitter indeed, and it’s here the beer becomes a little grassy for me.
This is just how I like my IPAs-and this is a good one-from Good People.
Update 10/15/2017: Good People beers are now in Georgia (what took you so long?), and are featured as beer of the month this October at Taco Mac. The IPA is murkier than I recall, but bursting with citrus and pine. I love this one, and it was reasonably priced at just $5.75 for a 23-ounce Chancellor mug.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
