Göller Zeiler Abendrot
Review Date 8/24/2024 By John Staradumsky
You may already know this, but I have been on a Brauerei Göller kick lately. You can read more about that in my review of Göller Dunkles Bockbier, which I scored recently at Everest Spirits in Kennesaw, Georgia. I bought a single of the Bockbier, which was a mistake, because when I drank it I immediately wanted more. I did go back for more, and bought all they had save for a single bottle, which I was careful to leave for someone else. I didn’t want to be a total hog, after all.
Anyway, on my first visit, I also picked up a bottle of Göller Zeiler Abendrot, which was in a row right next to the bock. This is an interesting concept, what Göller calls “craft beer”. This is an ale brewed with American hops, so I think by craft beer they are alluding to the modern craft beer movement. Really, though, everything from this brewer is craft beer. Hand crafted, quality beer.
Which means if you don’t speak German:
"Zeiler Abendrot" is the specialty for enjoying beer on a late summer evening. The craft beer gets its reddish colour from the addition of special malts, which are roasted and dried intensively during malting. The deep red craft beer specialty combines the sweet and spicy aromas of malt with fruity fresh aromas of Comet hops. Comet hops bring aromas to the beer that are reminiscent of forest fruits such as blueberries. The aroma is rounded off by the use of an ale yeast.
As it turned out, I drank my bottle of Zeiler Abendrot on a late summer evening, outside on the patio. It was 82 degrees with a gentle breeze, and the beer was well suited to the comfortable weather. Göller is located in Zeil am Main in Bavaria, so the “Zeiler” in Zeiler Abendrot means the beer is from Zeil. Abendrot means evening red.
Göller Zeiler Abendrot has an alcohol content of 4.9% by volume and I paid $5.98 for my bottle at Everest. It is stamped as best before 13.10.24. I would not go much beyond that, although kept refrigerated it might last longer I think. The beer is imported into the USA by Ancient Craft Imports.
Göller Zeiler Abendrot poours to a murky russet color with a thick foamy white head and a soft red malty nose. Taking a sip, the beer is full and malty up front, quite flavorful with roasty red ale notes. It hints at stewed malt and red berries and a very light touch of chocolate. Finishes balanced though not really bitter.
I liked this very much, and I think you will too.
Glad I tried it? T
Would I rebuy it??
