Göller Weizenbock
Review Date 10/24/2024 By John Staradumsky
Last year while visiting Helen for Oktoberfest, I was introduced to the wonderful world of Göller beers. Göller is a renowned Bavarian brewer, and I found their beers in bottles both at Alpine Brew Haus and Bottle Shop and at the Helen Festhalle, the latter where I got my first taste, a bottle of Göller Dunkel. If you clikd the link, you can learn more about that beer and my adventures in Helen.
This year, of course, I was back in Helen and found even more Göller beers at Alpine. I’ve only see them sold in one other place here in Georgia, Everest Spirits in Kennesaw, where I picked up a number of half liter bottles of their wonderful Doppelbock.
From Alpine, I brought home more of the Dunkel and new finds Kellerbier, Steinhauer Weisse, and the beer I’m here to tell you about today, Weizenbock. Here’s what the importer says about this beer:
Our Weizenbock is traditionally tapped in Autumn, and will only be available while supplies last. With an original gravity of 17.5%, our proprietary wheat beer yeast produces distinctive fruity notes with aromas of banana and currant, creating a delightful combination of sweet maltiness and smooth fruitiness laced through with a slight bitterness for balance. It is this artful combination of the fruit and the malted wheat flavors that makes great Weizenbocks stand out from the crowd.
Now, I do so love a good Weizenbock, and this my friends is a good Weizenbock. It has an alcohol content of 7.5% by volume and I paid $4.99 each for my half liter bottles at Alpine. My bottle is stamped Best By 04.09.24, which if in European format is September 24th of this year. I drank it just a bit past that, but I believe it could go far longer and still be wonderful.
Göller Weizenbock pours to a hazy orange color with a thick creamy uneven head and a nose of intense banana and ripe apple fruit. Taking a sip, the beer is thick and chewy with caramel malt. The fruit quickly pops, the banana and ripe McIntosh apple. A hint of clove and warming alcohol as well as notes of bubblegum also emerge.
Another winner from Göller.
Glad I tried it?
