Göller Dunkles Bockbier
Review Date 8/20/2024 By John Staradumsky
I stopped into what used to be Sherlock’s on Barret Parkway in Kennesaw, Georgia this past weekend (it's now Everest Spirits) in search of Spaten Oktoberfest, and what did I find? Göller Dunkles Bockbier! My introduction to Göller beers had occurred the fall before when I visited Helen, Georgia for Oktoberfest. Their Rauchbier immediately caught my attention, though I enjoyed several other of their beers as well.
Clearly, Göller is a quality brewery, and when I spied their Bockbier, which I correctly assumed to be a doppelbock, I gladly forked over my $5.98 for a half-liter swingtop bottle. More’s the pity, though, why did I not buy more? I’l tell you why: I had just loaded up on Oktoberfest and Pumpkin beers at Total Wine, stopped here for more, and I’m running out of room to store my beer.
Göller says:
Unser dunkles Bockbier wird traditionell im Herbst angestochen. Das tiefdunkle Starkbier besticht vor allem durch seine ausgeprägten Röstaromen wie z.B. Kaffee oder Kakao.
Which means if you don’t speak German:
Our dark bock beer is traditionally tapped in autumn. The deep-dark strong beer impresses most with its pronounced roasted aromas such as coffee or cocoa.
Göller Dunkles Bockbier has an alcohol content of 7% by volume. My bottle is stamped Best By 22.12.24. I think it could go well beyond that.
Göller Dunkles Bockbier pours to a dark mahogany color with a thick creamy tan head and a nose of fresh chewy toasty nutty malt. Taking a sip, the beer is super malty up front, chewy chocolaty with chocolate chip cookie notes. It’s just packed with super toasty nutty double decoction mash malt notes, fudge, molasses, pecans, and a gently sweet finish that only hints at bitter earthy hops. The beer is simply bursting with melanoidin goodness. I did not want the bottle to end.
This is a world class doppelbock, I am going back to buy all they have left.
Glad I tried it? T
Would I rebuy it??
