Golden Road beers are featured as beer of the month for May of 2018 at Taco Mac, but one of them showed up early: Golden Road Mango Cart Mango Wheat Ale, which I enjoyed in April. April is a funny month in Georgia; it can be warm, or it can be cold. April of 2018 was on the cold side, which only matters because I find fruit beers for the most part to be better as warm weather refreshers than cold weather sustainers.
Be that as it may, I ordered one, because I like mango, and I was curious about the beer. I had only had one beer prior from this brewery, Back Home Gingerbread Stout, and I liked it very much. Yes, I know now (I didn’t when I tried the Gingerbread Stout) that Golden Road is owned by AB Inbev. The beer is what matters.
Golden Road says:
First in a series inspired by the iconic fruit cart vendors of Los Angeles. A light Wheat Ale bursting with lots of fresh mango flavor and aroma, finishing crisp and refreshing.
Ingredients from the website:
Malts: 2-row, Wheat Malt
Hops: Bravo
Golden Road Mango Cart Mango Wheat Ale has an alcohol content of 4% by volume with 10 IBUs. I paid $5.76 for a 23-ounce mug at Taco Mac and it will cost you $8.99 for a six-pack of cans at Total Wine. Both seem reasonable to me.
My mug of Golden Road Mango Cart Mango Wheat Ale arrived a beautiful hazy orange color with a good amount of fluffy white head that quickly faded. The beer offers a fruity mango nose, and the palate is bursting with mango fruit, a bit of crackery wheat and a slightly tart finish.
I love the fruit and the low ABV, but I want more tartness. Still and all, I found the beer quite refreshing, and would not have a problem buying it again.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
