March 26^th, 2020, the day before the 78^th anniversary of the birth of beloved beer writer Michael Jackson. I was enjoying a few beers and, of course, toasting the Beer Hunter. I decided that in light of the occasion I needed a beer of gigantic proportions to properly toast. So, I drank a beer of truly Gigantic proportions: Gigantic Most Premium Russian Imperial Stout.

This is my first ever beer from Portland, Oregon’s Gigantic brewery. Gigantic does not sell its beer in Georgia, but I got a bottle through an order I placed with Craftshack. The service is a little pricey, but it’s worth it to get access to beers (like this one) I would otherwise not be able to buy. Then too, in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, we’re trying to minimize trips to the store.

Gigantic says:

As black as the uncaring hearts of the Czars of Russia, as rich as their estates, as decadent as their palaces, and big enough for their empire. This imperial stout is nothing if not most premium.

The label of Gigantic Most Premium Russian Imperial Stout sports a grasshopper wearing a Czarist uniform. Many Imperial Stouts brewed by American craft brewers feature communist iconography, but the Czarist period is more accurately associated with the style. No comment on how true the grasshopper is.

Gigantic Most Premium Russian Imperial Stout has an alcohol content of 10% by volume with 55 IBUs. I paid $7.85 for my bottle but could not find a listing for this at Total Wine. They do sell the bigger Most Most Russian Imperial Stout for $8.99 a bomber, so likely the half liter of the beer I tried is less.

Malts: NW Pale, Vienna, C45,

Gigantic Most Premium Russian Imperial Stout pours to a jet-black color with a thick creamy tan head and a vibrant roasty nose. Taking a sip, the beer is thick and full in body, like, crude oil thick, with (wait for it) Gigantic roasty notes of char and espresso. The whole affair finishes bitter with roasted barley and is warm with alcohol.

A fantastic sipping beer, and a really great classic imperial stout.

And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
