Here’s a quick take on a beer I enjoyed at Taco Mac recently: Gate City Awe Juice!!! IPA. This is one in a line of IPAs from Gate City that seem designed top be awe inspiring (they currently have Awe Deuce, a double/Imperial IPA, and Awe Some, a triple IPA, on tap at the brewery. And a Hefeweizen named Hanz Gruber. Cool, that!) Curiously, Awe Some is listed at 8% ABV and Awe Deuce 9%. That does not make a lot of sense to me, but hey, I’m here to talk about Awe Juice!!! Anyway.
Right now, Gate City doesn’t have any information on this beer on their website, but it is clearly a New England Style IPA. The beer has an alcohol content of 7.4% by volume according to Taco Mac with 30 IBUs. Untappd lists ingredients of Mosaic and Citra Hops as well as Oats. I paid $5 for an 11-ounce glass at Taco Mac and it sells for $13.99 a 4-pack of pint cans at Total Wine.
My glass of Gate City Awe Juice!!! arrived an only slightly hazy orange amber in color with a tight white cap of foam and citrus peel and resin in the nose. Taking a sip, I got more sticky resin in the palate, lots of citrus, a solid maltiness and an aggressive bitter finish.
This was a tasty classic American IPA more than anything else, and I love it for that. I’ll give it four stars but take back a half star for the high price; lots of breweries today are putting out similar beers of the same quality for less (like Wild Leap Chance IPA which I drank in the same sitting). Still and all, I would definitely buy it again.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
