Fuller's London
Porter is not a beer for the timid. When you sip this beer, it bites back.
This is a full, rich flavorful brew that certainly belongs on any list of
the world's finest porters. Porter originated in London in the early
eighteen hundreds. Originally known as "entire", it soon took on it's more
famous appellation after the porters of London took a keen fondness to it.
I purchased a half liter (18.6 ounce) bottle of this beer. The half liter
bottle was introduced earlier this year and is the perfect amount to fill my
Fuller's imperial pint glass. The porter is protected from harmful light by
the brown glass bottle and has a best before date of January 2001. Imported
beers have come a long way in my opinion, probably as a result of better
sales. I seem to be getting them in much fresher condition than in the past.
This one is in remarkably good condition.
Fuller's London Porter is very dark brown to black in color. If you hold it
to the light, some will penetrate turning the beer ruby reddish. Head
formation is light; the nose is roasty and coffeeish. So much so one might
be tempted to sip this fine brew at breakfast in place of coffee. The palate
is rich and complex, at once creamy, roasty, hinting at licorice up front
and bittersweet chocolate and coffee in the finish. A bitter edge emerges
after you've sipped and lingers on.
I like this by itself but it would go well with chocolate chip cookies,
chocolate ice cream, or perhaps a slice of dark chocolate cake.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
