Here’s my first ever beer from the Frothy Beard brewery of Charleston, South Carolina: !Andale! Jalapeno Cilantro Pale Ale. Actually, the first exclamation point is upside down on the label, but I’m too lazy to look up how to do that in Word. Anyway, as far as I can gather, Andale is Spanish for “hurry up”.
We did drive by the Frothy Beard brewery, but it was as we were heading home and I had a long drive ahead of me. I got a single can of !Andale! at Total Wine in Charleston. The brewery says on their website:
If you want something spicy then you’ve found the right beer. We “dry hop” this beer with an abundant amount of Jalapeños and Cilantro to give it a nice burn in the back of your throat and a mouth watering aroma.
My can of Frothy Beard !Andale! Cilantro Pale Ale says it has an alcohol content of 5.1% by volume, although the website say 5.3%. The website states an IBU count of 50 as well. Total Wine was selling it for $10.99 a six-pack in cans.
Frothy Beard !Andale! Jalapeno Cilantro Pale Ale pours to a gorgeous orange amber color with a moderate head of creamy foam. The nose is robust with green vegetal jalapeno notes and even a little heat in the nostrils. Taking a sip, there’s a medium maltiness akin to a pale ale and big green vegetal jalapeno notes laced with herbal cilantro and, oddly, celery notes. The beer finishes dry spicy and lingers with heat on the tongue and back of the throat. A good bit of heat actually, enough to make this interesting and let you know you drank a chili beer.
A little like liquid jalapeno in flavor and heat, this is a beer that you may not drink more than one of in a sitting, but when you drink that one, it will be enough.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
