Frederick Brewing
Company, Frederick, Maryland. Bright orange color with good carbonation and
head formation. Nose is citric with strong caramel notes. The caramel flavor
is very strong in the palate from the Steinbier method of production, where
extremely hot rocks are placed into the wort, causing malt sugars to
caramelize and fuse onto them. Later these stones are placed into the
fermenting beer to impart a rich candyish flavor. There's some diacetyl to
Brimstone's take on the style (leading me to suspect this is an ale rather
than a lager), as well as a good dose of hop bitterness in the finish, which
slightly distracts one from the contributions of the stones, but all around
this is a fine and tasty brew.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
