I love a good porter, don’t you? People’s Porter from the Foothills brewery of Winston-Salem, North Carolina is a very good porter. I love cherries, don’t you? What if I told you you could enjoy both, all in the same glass? Cherries and porter are a natural pairing; when well done, the bright cherry fruit pops perfectly against the dark roasty malt.
Imagine my delight, then, when I saw Foothills People’s Cherry Porter on tap at Harrah’s Cherokee Valley River casino. I love that Harrah’s features so many wonderful local North Carolina beers.
Foothills says:
Our award-winning robust porter, aged in bourbon barrels with tart red cherries from the Pacific Northwest. Tart with a hint of sweetness.
Bourbon barrels too? Well, well!
Foothills People’s Cherry Porter has an alcohol content of 5.8% by volume with 35 IBUs. I paid $5.61 for a 16-ounce draft.
My cup of Foothills People’s Cherry Porter was jet-black in color with a thick creamy tan head and a hint of cherry in the nose. Taking a sip I got a little more cherry in the palate, good roast, a little chocolate and a more than balancing roasty finish.
I didn’t get the barrel aging, and I would have liked more cherry, but this was a tasty little beer I would certainly buy again.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
