The people demanded a porter, that much was known. The south, after all, was not known for its porters and stouts, mores the pity indeed. The fine folks at Foothills Brewing of Winston Salem, North Carolina decided to give the people what they demanded: a solid porter at a reasonable price: Foothills Brewing People’s Porter.
Being a native born New Englander myself, I’m used to porters and stouts abounding. So I can appreciate a good one when I come across it, and my friends, Foothills People’s Porter is a very good porter indeed. I bought a bottle last April at Bruisin’ Ales in Asheville (soon to be shipping beer! Check them out) and it has been stashed in my dedicated beer refrigerator ever since.
From the Foothills website:
Porter.
Consider it the mild-mannered granddaddy of stout. Our version stays true to
the classic English style popularized by the Industrial Revolution’s working
class. Ruby-hued with strong upfront notes of chocolate and toffee, People’s
Porter finishes strong and flavorful, blending delicious herbal hop flavor
and just a hint of espresso. Bloody terrific!
People’s Porter is a bit stronger than your average English porter at 6.25% by volume. IBU count is 42 and I paid a very reasonable indeed $4.50 for a bomber bottle. What good is great porter, after all, if the people can’t afford it?
Foothills Brewing People’s Porter pours to a jet black color with a thick creamy tan head and a rich enticing nose of roast and licorice. Taking a sip, the beer has just the right body I want in a body, not too thin but not too thick either. Just right. Roasted coffee, bittersweet chocolate, licorice, and some minty herbal hops at the last combine with the roast to make this finish big and bitter and delicious.
The people love their porter, and the people love People’s Porter. If you’re a people, you’re sure to love it too.
Update: 4/7/2016: Foothills beers are now available in Georgia! To celebrate, Taco Mac has proclaimed April to be Foothills month, or at least they've made Foothills the beer of the month. Tonight is a special night for another reason, as I'll be hitting my 750th Brewniversity beer here in Canton and and a result become a Brewniversity Dean!
Foothills People's Porter starts the night off as credit 747, and what a way to do so. Chocolate and roast in the nose, smooth and dark chocolaty with an almost harsh roastiness at the finish. $6.50 and that with a free glass, this is a very nicely done beer. 3 more to Dean.....
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
