Session IPAs, are they still a thing? Apparently, they are. They used to be ubiquitous but today? Not so much. New England IPAs have taken their place, and now you can’t ask for a beer anywhere without finding those. Such is the fickle nature of the beer geek.
I did find a new Session IPA recently in the form of Hopjob Session IPA form North Carolina’s Foothills brewery. Foothills rarely does anything by half measures and Hopjob Session IPA is no exception. It’s a robust hoppy brew that accents the hops in a special way all it’s own, as we shall soon see.
From the label:
End of the day. Work’s done. Fun’s in session. Make it last with this aromatic ale brewed to keep the good times going. A session IPA full of Azacca™, Mosaic™ and Sorachi Ace™ hops, with all the flavor you’ve come to expect from Foothills. Thirsty? Get a Job.
Foothills’ Hopjob Session IPA has an alcohol content of 4.9% by volume with 75 IBUs. It runs $18.99 a 12-pack at Total Wine and is a May-July seasonal.
Hopjob Session IPA pours to a beautiful orange amber color with a medium head of foam and an herbal, citrusy nose. Taking a sip, the beer has medium malt as these beers typically do, but the hops are interesting and different, oily even. They are grassy and herbal as the nose promised, and also zesty with lemony citrus (the Sorachi Ace). The beer finishes grassy and herbal bitter and quite refreshing.
This is one of the better session IPAs out there in my opinion, and one I will be looking for again.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
