Once upon a time, there was a little girl named Goldilager. OK, she wasn’t that little; Goldilager had just turned 22 a few months ago. Anyway, Goldilager was walking through the forest one day when she came upon a house. She knocked, but no one answered, so Goldilager decided to let herself in, because you see she was very thirsty, and also very much a narcissist.
Entering the kitchen, Goldilager found three brands of porter in the fridge, and decided to drink them all. She poured each into a glass and started to sip from the first one.
"This porter is too thick!" she exclaimed. “It’s more like a stout!”
So, she sipped porter from the second glass.
"This porter is too thin," she complained! “It has no body!”
The last porter was her only hope, but luckily for Goldilager, it was Raincloud Robust Porter from the Foolproof Brewing Company of Pawtucket, Rhode Island.
"Ahhh, this porter is just right," she exclaimed as she drained her glass.
Goldilager then proceeded to head upstairs for a nap, feeling a little lightheaded from all that beer. Sadly for her, the occupants of the home, who just happened to be three rather large bears, arrived home just then and, seeing what she had done, eviscerated her in a most grisly fashion.
The moral of the story, of course, is that whenever you break into a bear’s home you might get away with stealing their porridge, but don’t ever, ever mess with their beer.
Especially if it’s as good a beer as Raincloud Robust Porter. I’ve been eager to try the beers of this Pawtucket, Rhode Island brewer for some time, and recently acquired a can of Raincloud in a beer trade. Though I now live in Canton, Georgia, I lived most of my life in Rhode Island, and just like Raincloud I was born in Pawtucket. Raincloud, though, always has an alcohol content of 6.5% by volume. Mine is only occasionally that high.
Here’s what Foolproof says about Raincloud Robust Porter on the can:
It’s pouring outside, so pour yourself something inside...
Raincloud is the perfect “stay at home” brew. Dark, smooth, mysterious—this rich and flavorful porter is brewed with chocolate and crystal malts and a subtle blend of European hops. Raincloud is the ideal accompaniment for a lazy day of movie watching or reading.
And here’s what I say:
Foolproof Raincloud Robust Porter pours to a jet black color with a towering head of rocky tan foam (and that on a gentle pour) and a roasty, coffeeish, slightly phenolic nose. Taking a sip this one hits a homerun for a robust porter. The body is just right-not too thick (or it might be a stout), and not too thin-just right, and ask poor old Goldilager if you don’t believe me. The beer is roasty and coffeeish with dark bittersweet chocolate notes, a hint of caramel, espresso beans, chocolate pudding, light phenols, and minty-grassy herbal and bitter hops in the finish. That finish is roasty bitter too, and this beer is just exceptional.
A roasty blast Foolproof Raincloud Robust Porter is everything I want in a Robust Porter. It doesn’t get better than this, my friends.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
