Flying Monkeys The Chocolate Manifesto Triple Chocolate Milk Stout: I can't decide if its beer made with chocolate or chocolate made with beer. Chocolate Malt Ovaltine is what it really reminds me of with an extra dash of cocoa, folks, if you really want to know. Which I assume you do, or you wouldn’t be here right now. Flying Monkeys Brewery is located in Barrie, Ontario, and this is the first beer I’ve had from them. It’s not sold in Georgia, but I got a bottle from the very generous Scott White, whose guest video you can see above.
Flying Monkeys The Chocolate Manifesto Triple Chocolate Milk Stout is sold in 25.9-ounce bottles stuffed into neat little cardboard boxes. There’s not a lot of information about the beer or the brewery on the company website except to say that that website is still under construction. The box and label tell me some interesting things though.
It’s made with chocolate. They say three kinds of chocolate, but I say two plus chocolate malt, which is not chocolate but a highly kilned barley malt. The chocolate types here are:
· Forest garden, shade-grown Cacao nibs.
· Roasted whole Cacao powder.
These come from Chocosol Traders of Toronto and are “horizontally traded”. No word on hop varietals, but the beer is made with traditional barley malt, oats, and lactose as well.
Flying Monkeys The Chocolate Manifesto Triple Chocolate Milk Stout has an alcohol content of 10% by volume, making it a sipping beer for sure. The price tag on the box is $13.43, a price as hefty as the alcohol content.
Flying Monkeys The Chocolate Manifesto Triple Chocolate Milk Stout pours to a jet black color with a thick creamy tan head and a really intense dark powdery chocolate Ovaltine nose. Taking a sip, I get the same malty chocolate Ovaltine notes with a bit of bittersweet dark chocolate and a lot of powdery cocoa. At the last, the dark chocolate occludes any hop or sweetness and the alcohol warmth comes through to dry it out too.
OK folks, we have a winner. Flying Monkeys The Chocolate Manifesto Triple Chocolate Milk Stout gets the nod as the most chocolaty chocolate beer I’ve ever tried (and I’ve tried a lot). The malt and chocolate combo really reinforces the Ovaltine impression; a thick chocolate malted shake comes to mind as well. However you enjoy it, sip slowly and savor all the chocolaty goodness here. It’s truly an amazing beer my friends and justifies the high price in my humble opinion.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
