Flensburger Weizen

Flensburger Weizen! I just love to say that, donít you? Flensburger Weizen! It just rolls off the tongue. More than I like the way it rolls off the tongue, though, I love the way it rolls *on* the tongue. As in, when I take a sip of this crisp, refreshing German wheat beer. Itís perfect for warm weather, and I was reminded of this while sipping a bottle recently on a warm June evening.

As one should, I popped the swing-top 33CL bottle and decanted about two thirds of the liquid into my glass. Then I swirled the remainder in the bottle to rouse the yeasty sediment at the bottom, and then poured into my glass. Yeast is good for you, and adds flavor to your beer.

Flensburger says on their website:

ďThe Flensburger among the wheat beers. Golden colour, fresh, sparkling and naturally cloudy. The top-fermented beer specialty, brewed with finest wheat and barley malt, characterized by a fruity and refreshing taste.ď

Flensburger Weizen has an alcohol content of 5.1% by volume, and though I have never seen this in Georgia, I got a bottle from Craftshack for $1.43 plus shipping. Total Wine sells it for $11.99 a 4-pack, though not in Georgia. My bottle is stamped 10.01.21, which in European format is January 10th, 2021. I am not sure if that is a bottled date or a best by date, but the beer was wonderful so one assumes the former.

Flensburger Weizen pours to a hazy yellow color with a thick fluffy white head and a nose of tart wheat and a bit of banana. Taking a sip, the beer is crisp and tart with bready wheat, banana, a hint of bubble gum, spicy cloves, and a tart wheaty finish. This is a very, very good hefeweizen and I only wish it came in a bigger bottles (it does come in 5L cans!). As it is, I am glad I got to try it, and as much as I love German beer, I will be on the hunt for more.

And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
