On 1/23/1996 I wrote this about Flag Porter:
...a little about it from my experience. The label
proudly proclaims that the beer is an "Alan D. Eames selection". It tells
about the yeast
salvaged from an 1825 shipwreck in the English Channel. (What I can't
understand is why the label says "1850 Original". If the porter they are
basing this on originated in 1850, how did yeast-filled bottles of it sink
in 1825? Was this Dr. Who's favorite brew?) Anyway, my personal opinion of
the stuff is that it's not bad, in the league with Old
Growler, Young's London Porter and Sammy Smith's. Unfortunately, the bottle
I bought was priced at $5.50, while the same size bottle of Old
Growler could be had for $1.50. While price is not a consideration to me for
quality beer, I do expect more bang for the buck, flavor wise.
Flag Porter is a brown porter in style, and in color. It’s dark
brown, and if you hold it up to the light some will pass through it. The
beer has a creamy tan head and slightly fruity, buttery nose. The palate is
smooth and malty with hints of butter, raisin, plum pudding and chocolate.
The finish is slightly sweet with just a gentle touch of hops that become
more apparent after the beer is swallowed. Flag Porter is slightly on the
expensive side, retailing for $7.99 for a four pack of 12 ounce bottles.
A definite dessert beer, recommended with plum pudding or chocolate cake.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
