Well look at this! Bomber bottles at Aldi. For a long time, I’ve enjoyed quality bargain brew the likes of Wernesgruner Pilsner and Feldschlosschen Schwartzbier from Aldi. Those German imports were always in 12-ounce six-packs or 16-ounce 4-packs, however. Of late, Aldi has been offering more and more American-style craft beers, some under the Tumwater brand brewed for them by Fish Brewing in Olympia, Washington.
Today while shopping at Aldi I picked up a bottle of Tumwater Holiday Spice Brown Ale, a tasty spicy treat brewed with nutmeg, clove, cinnamon and ginger. There’s not much information available about the beer except on the label, which says:
Enjoy the spice of life with Holiday Spice Brown Ale brewed with nutmeg, cinnamon, clove and ginger.
It also says that Fish brewing is “The recipient of the 2015 World’s Best Beer Award”.
Tumwater Holiday Spice Brown Ale has an alcohol content of 7% by volume and will only set you back $3.49-a steal these days for a bomber of great beer.
Tumwater Holiday Spice Brown Ale pours to a murky brown color with a thick rocky head and a soft ginger and clove nose. Taking a sip, the beer has subtle cookie malts up front followed by lots of spice-dry clove and pungent nutmeg, subtle ginger and least of all cinnamon sticks. The spices run straight through to the finish where the ginger intensifies and reminds me of a bite off a holiday gingerbread cookie. They dry the beer in the finish, and it ends dry with lingering spice.
A very tasty Christmas Cookie of a beer, and an amazing bargain at the price but fair warning, the spice is intense, and may be overpowering for some. If you love holiday spices, as I do, then this is a beer you should not miss. Add some spice to your holidays and live a little. With Tumwater Holiday Spice Brown Ale you can do it, and still have enough money left over to feed the reindeer.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
