Here’s a beer I picked up while visiting Spring Hill, Tennessee: Fat Bottom Ruby, an American Red Ale as the brewery describes it. About a year earlier I had tried my first beer from this brewery, Fat Bottom Knockout IPA, and I was very impressed. A solid, no-nonsense easy drinking India Pale Ale at a bargain price. Fat Bottom Ruby Red Ale is much the same, a delicious beer that I very much enjoyed.
Nashville’s Fat Bottom Brewery offers about 8 different beers all told, 4 of them year round and 4 seasonal. Fat Bottom Ruby is their best seller, and the brewery recommends it with local favorite Nashville Hot Chicken. That sounds like a winning combination to me, spicy hops and spicier chicken.
From the brewery website:
Our most popular beer, she’s the athletic All-American, but with a secretly naughty side. Hop-forward but not bitter, well-balanced and completely drinkable, this is a beer you can flirt with all night and tell your friends about.
Fat Bottom Ruby American Red Ale has an alcohol content of 5.3% by volume with 35 IBUs. The beer sells for a very reasonable $5.99 for 4 16-ounce cans.
Fat Bottom Ruby American Red Ale pours to a, well, ruby red color with a thick rocky head formation and a luscious nose of stewed malts and citrusy hops. Taking a sip, the beer is front loaded with stewed and soft cookie malts before I get berry fruit, hints of citrus and a very nice, more than balancing bitter finish. There’s intense red berry fruit as it warms.
A delightful, drinkable American Red at a great price. We visit Spring Hill at least once a year, and I can’t imagine going without bringing back beer from Fat Bottom.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
