Here’s another great beer that I scored on a recent trip to Nashville, folks. It’s called Fat Bottom Knockout IPA, the beer that has a knockout on the label and in the can, too. Fat Bottom is based in Nashville, and I think I might have missed out by not buying another beer they had available, but no worries. I’ll be back to Nashville for more.
I am assuming that this beer is fairly new, because there is no listing for it on the brewery’s website. All the information I have is from the can and carrier carton. The can admonishes the drinker that the beer is “Unpasteurized. Unfiltered. Keep it cold.” My carton was not refrigerated, but the Kroger store where I bought it was quite chilly all the same.
The carton has the following description of the beer from the brewery:
Healthy additions of Cascade and Pacific Jade hops give this classic American IPA the punch she needs to be a contender. Weighing in at 80 IBUs with crisp flavor and grapefruit aromas. She’s a real knockout!
Fat Bottom Knockout IPA has an alcohol content of 5.9% according to the beer’s Tennessee distributor, and I paid a very reasonable $5.99 for a 4-pack of 16-ounce cans. The carton has a $1 coupon printed on it, basically if you bring it to the brewery they’ll sell you 4 more cans at $1 off (one assumes $4.99 then).
Fat Bottom Knockout IPA pours to a bright orange amber color with a thick rocky head formation and a very minty grassy nose that suggests Wrigley’s spearmint gum. Taking a sip, I get some very nice chewy caramel malty notes up front followed by a bit of butter and then some very resiny pine notes and citric grapefruit followed by the herbal minty grassy notes the nose promised and a long dry very bitter finish. This is not your average IPA, folks, it’s different, and it’s delicious. If you’re in the area, don’t miss it! It even has excellent hop burps, so you can really enjoy it twice as long…..
I’d rate this as a 4 for style with another ½ star bonus for the bargain price.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
