Toccoa Brown Ale

Review Date 11/21/2017   By John Staradumsky

Hadn’t I had Fannin Toccoa Brown Ale before? I thought I had, but it turned out I had not. I’ve been to the brewery in Blue Ridge and drank all the beer they had on tap at the time. Toccoa Brown wasn’t one of them. I’ve had their brews at Taco Mac plenty of times, too. Again, not the Toccoa Brown.

No worries! I bought a six-pack and I’m enjoying a bottle tonight. Fannin is one of my local breweries, about an hour north of where I live in Canton. Maybe a little more. Here’s what they say about Toccoa Brown on the label:

An American Brown Ale using six different grains and rolled oats to provide a distinctive malt forward slightly coffee style. Lightly hopped with Willamette and Liberty, it’s a perfect pairing with hearty dishes.

Now, all those malts sound wonderful and in line with an American Brown, though they are usually aggressively hopped, not lightly hopped. We shall see.

Fannin Toccoa Brown Ale has an alcohol content of 6.1% by volume with 25 IBUs. I paid $10.99 for a six-pack of bottles at Total Wine. Toccoa is a city in North Georgia and home of the famous Toccoa Falls and Currahee Mountain.

Fannin Toccoa Brown Ale pours to a murky brown color with a thick fluffy tan head and an appetizing cookie malt nose. Taking a sip, those sweet, nutty and chocolaty cookie malt notes are bolder than the nose promised, and the beer has a full, smooth maltiness. The finish is grassy and herbal and dries the beer perfectly, and then some.

Malt and hops each play their part well in this delicious brown ale, an American Brown indeed I think if a slightly less assertive one in the malt department. Still, more than lightly hopped.

And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
