Another Fairhope beer! I’ve been impressed with the beers of this Fairhope, Alabama brewer since they recently started selling in Georgia. One beer I was puzzled about, though, was Fairhope Cinco Uno. A standard strength pale ale as it was described on the draught menu, it was served in an 11-ounce glass. A sip told me this was a spiced pale ale, and a trip to the brewery website told me more:
We started with our Fairhope 51 and added a healthy dose of jalape os. This beer starts with a great smell of peppers and finishes with a nice touch of spiciness but without any burn.
Style: Pale Ale with Jalapeno peppers
So there it was. A specialty beer then, described by Fairhope as one of their Occasionals. Cinco Uno, of course, is Spanish for 51. Fairhope Cinco Uno has an alcohol content of 5.8%. I paid $6 for my glass at Taco Mac. I drank with much aplomb to find out more about the beer.
My glass of Fairhope Cinco Uno arrived a deep amber color with a light creamy head and spicy jalapeños in the aroma. Taking a sip, the beer has a medium caramel maltiness up front, then oodles of green vegetal jalapeño flavor with moderate heat. The heat is more pronounced in the balanced finish though still light and that makes the beer surprisingly drinkable.
I always want a lot of heat in chili/pepper beers, but here the explosion of pepper flavor compensates. I just love that pepper flavor here, and I’m so glad I stumbled on this one.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
