Sweet baby Jesus is this beer good! Oops, sorry about that. Wrong beer! You’ll forgive me, though, if I’ve confused Du Claw Sweet Baby Jesus! Chocolate Peanut Butter Porter for the beer I’m drinking now, Evil Genius Purple Monkey Dishwasher Chocolate Peanut Butter Porter. Both are sort of a Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup in a bottle, and seem quite similar to me.
This is my first Evil Genius beer, and I got it in a beer trade from my good old buddy Scott White. Thanks Scott! Evil Genius is in Pennsylvania, not that far from Du Claw in Maryland. Or at least the company is, listed on the bottle as based out of Pittston, PA. Currently, they’re a contract brewer using the facilities of Thomas Hooker in Connecticut. Hooker is an excellent brewer and makes one of my all-time favorite beers in the world, Liberator Doppelbock. Evil Genius hopes to open a brewery in Philadelphia some time in 2017, but they’re in good hands with Hooker until they do.
Just what is a purple monkey dishwasher by the way? I had to look that one up. Urbandictionary.com explains it as slang for the distortion that occurs when rumors travel.
From the website:
Purple Monkey Dishwasher is our robust porter made with Chocolate and Peanut Butter. We start with a world-class American-style porter recipe, which is already laden with notes of chocolate, sweet malts, caramel, and molasses, and then take it to the NEXT LEVEL by infusing it with natural chocolate and peanut butter! The final product is like a candy bar in a bottle that is deceptively quaffable despite it's strength. Just take one sip and you'll understand why this is our signature, year round porter.
Ingredients, also from the website:
Malts: 2 Row, Crystal, Chocolate, Roasted Barley
Hops: Tettnang and Warrior
Evil Genius Purple Monkey Dishwasher Chocolate Peanut Butter Porter has an alcohol content of 6.7% by volume with 35 IBUs.
Evil Genius Purple Monkey Dishwasher Chocolate Peanut Butter Porter pours to a jet-black color with a thick creamy head and a rich chocolate and peanut nose. Taking a sip, the beer has chocolaty roasty notes up front followed by solid nutty notes, more peanuty really than peanut buttery and reminding me of a Mary Jane candy, just as Sweet baby Jesus did. I think it’s the sweetness of a Reese’s that’s missing, and instead the beer finishes dry and nutty like a Mr. Goodbar.
Regardless, this is a tasty beer that will leave you thinking candy as you drink it. Neither Sweet Baby Jesus! Or Purple Monkey Dishwasher are sold in my area, but if I ever in my travels find a store with both I’d love to do a side by side tasting.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
