Here’s a pumpkin ale with a difference: Elysian Night Owl Pumpkin Ale. The difference here is that the beer is brewed with pumpkin seeds-roastedand unroasted. Are there are other breweries doing the same? I don’t know. Certainly though this is the first beer I can recall that clearly states it as an ingredient.

As I type, it’s late October, and many see that as the end of pumpkin beer season. Not me! After all, we enjoy pumpkin pie well through the close of the year at Thanksgiving and Christmas, and even on New Year’s Day. I enjoy pumpkin ales just as long, and I’ll be finishing off my six-pack of Elysian Night Owl, a new beer for me, as fall and winter progress. That is, if my daughter doesn’t drink it before I do.

Brewed with over 7 lbs. of pumpkin per barrel, roasted and raw pumpkin seeds, and spiced in conditioning with ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves and allspice.

SPECIAL Both roasted and raw pumpkin seeds are in the mash, with pumpkin added to the mash, kettle and fermenter.

Elysian Night Owl Pumpkin Ale has an alcohol content of 6.7% by volume with 18 IBUs. It is a bit pricey, and I paid $11.39 for a six-pack at Target. Elysian also makes a luscious Coffee Pumpkin Ale called Punkuccino.

Elysian Night Owl Pumpkin Ale pours to a dark orange color with a medium head of creamy foam and a rich, alluring pumpkin and spice nose. Taking a sip, the beer really packs on the pumpkin pie flavor, with vegetal pumpkin but bright spicy ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg and clove. A bit of toasted pumpkin seed flavor comes through, too, though to be honest I might not have picked that out if they didn’t advertise it. The finish is spicy dry, and overall this is a very tasty pumpkin ale. The ginger really pops here my friends, and the pumpkin.
