Where did 2018 go? That’s what I want to know. Here it is, already January of 2019. My mother once told me that the older you get, the faster time goes by. I always told her that was impossible; time goes by at exactly the same rate no matter your age. Now that I’m getting older myself, though, I think she’ might have been onto something.
That said, a new month brings a new Beer of the Month at Taco Mac, and for January the featured brewery is Elysian. This is the second time Elysian beer have been featured, though the first time, also January but of 2017, they split the honor with 10 Barrel Brewing. Tonight, I’m sipping an Elysian Dragonstooth Imperial Oatmeal Stout, and I’m enjoying the hell out of it.
I
should mention that it’s a Thursday night. Thursday night is pint glass
night at Taco Mac, or at least, it has been in the past. They’re breaking it
up with some different swag this time around: a hat tonight, sunglass next
week, then a glass the next week, a sticker and bottle opener 7 days later,
and finally a T-Shirt.
I will say this: Dragonstooth Stout is a wonderful beer and, I was surprised to see, a full mug pour, too. It clocks in at 8.1% by volume with 56 IBUs and I paid $7.51 for a 23-ounce mug, with the hat included. A bomber costs $6.49 at Total Wine.
Here’s what Elysian says about the beer:
Pours a deep, midnight black with a light tan head. Smells of coffee and dark chocolate and the mouthfeel is velvety smooth with flavors of roasted malts, oatmeal and warm bread. Dragonstooth is a very drinkable stout-satisfying but not heavy.
Ingredients, also from the website:
Malts: Pale, Munich, C-77, Chocolate, Roasted Barley and Rolled Oats.
Hops: Bittered with Magnum, finished with Cascade and Centennial.
My mug of Elysian Dragonstooth Imperial Oatmeal Stout arrived jet-black in color with a thick creamy tan head formation and roast and powdered cocoa in the nose. Taking a sip the beer offers a full rich mouthfeel with sinful dark chocolate notes, licorice, smooth silky oats, and a roasty bitter finish.
Truly delightful, Elysian Dragonstooth Imperial Oatmeal Stout is a beer I will definitely seek out again.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
