Elysian Bifrost Winter Ale

Review Date 7/28/2021  By John Staradumsky

Well, this is distressing. I broke out my bottle of Elysian Bifrost Winter Ale that I had bought in December of 2020, and went to check my review of the beer to compare notes. And yet…I found none. I have had the beer a few times before, including once in Seattle, but never took notes apparently. Mores the pity as this is a very fine beer indeed. I must suffer a penance.

The beer takes its name from the Bifrost Bridge of Norse mythology, which connects Asgard with Midgard (Earth). All you Loki streamers out there, here’s the beer for you!

Elysian says on the label:

Bifrost is our lively winter brew, a bold pale ale with citrus and earthy hop character balanced by a smooth malt backbone. Unfiltered and may contain sediment.

Elysian Bifrost Winter Ale has an alcohol content of 8.3% by volume. Total Wine sells it for $12.49 a six-pack. My bottle is marked Experience by 04/21/21 on the label, but how could I enjoy it for Christmas in July if I did that? I drank it on July 18th.

Elysian Bifrost Winter Ale pours to a hazy orange color with a thick fluffy white head and a nose of vibrant citrusy hops. A thick layer of Brussels Lace forms on the sides of the glass and follows the  liquid all the way to the bottom.

Taking a sip, the beer is medium to full in body with more of the citrusy notes the nose promised, as well as grassy earthy herbal hops, a hint of anise, more bright citrus (peel this time) and a long dry bitter finish with a hint of alcohol warmth. It is very dry with earthy minty hops and spice.

This is a delightful beer for Christmas, whether in December or July. I will buy it again, for sure, but really, I already have.

And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
