Steve Austin's Broken Skull IPA

Review Date 8/1/2020  By John Staradumsky

Does “Stone Cold” Steve Austin drink beer? I’m sure I don’t know. He makes beer though, or more correctly, has beer made under his branding. Steve Austin’s Broken Skull IPA is made by El Segundo Brewing Company for Steve Austin. Ummm, sort of. My can says it was “Brewed and canned for El Segundo Brewing Company by Alesmith Brewing Company.” I’ve had plenty of contract brews in my day, but this is the first contract brew I’ve come across that was double contract brewed.

Anyway, I checked the brewery website (El Segundo, not Alesmith) to see if I could get his beer in Georgia:

Southern CA- Available!

Northern CA – Available!

Oregon – Available!

AZ, CT, KY, MA, MD/DC, ME, NH, NJ, NV, NY, RI, OH, TX, VA, VT, WI- Available!

We’re working on other states…stay tuned!

Georgia, sadly, is not on that list, but as you must realize since I’m here reviewing this beer, I obtained a can. Craftshack online beer store had it in stock.

From the can label:

Broken Skull India Pale Ale: a bad-ass 6.7% IPA designed by Steve Austin and El Segundo Brewing Company for the working man & woman. It features Citra, Cascade, and Chinook hops to deliver big flavor with an easy finish. Now stop reading and start enjoying this awesome beer! Cheers!

My can of Steve Austin’s Broken Skull IPA is stamped CANNED ON 04/29/20. I paid $5.39 for it. Total Wine sells the beer in Virginia for $13.49 a 4-pack of pint cans, which seems a little more than the working man & woman might want to pay. Maybe a six-pack for that, or $9.99 a 4-pack seems more reasonable.

Steve Austin’s Broken Skull IPA pours to a pale, slightly hazy yellow color with a medium head of a fluffy white foam and an herbal, citrusy hop nose. Taking a sip, the beer is medium in body, gently hopped with flowery cascades and citrusy grapefruit centennials. It finishes bitter, but not overly so. This is an easy drinking, herbal IPA, a bit on the light side, but not overly so. It’s an enjoyable beer, if not a memorable one, and I would certainly drink it again.

Dare I say it is best enjoyed Stone Cold?

And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
