Bismarkhbrau! Vas in Hölle ist das? If you examine the can label, you will see the visage of Otto Von Bismarck on it, and his name printed in large type as well. But where did the “c” go in the name of the brand, and where did the “h” come from? Inquiring minds want to know.
Actually, Bismarkhbrau is a brand brewed and sold by Germany’s Eibauer Brauerei. They market many beers under different brands, though I suspect many of them are the same. Such seems to be the case with Bismarkhbrau Das Bockbier Dunkel, which I recently picked up in Helen, Georgia.
I found it had the same strength and tasted the same as a few other doppelbocks I have enjoyed from Eibauer: Eibauer St. M Dunkel Bock and Eibauer Dunkler Bock.
From the label:
Bockbeer Dunkel: Strong, dark beer with high alcohol content. It has an intense, rich, malty taste with notes of caramel and dried fruit. Bock is a beer for special occasions. Their rich flavor and high ABV make them ideal for cold winter evenings.
Bismarkhbrau Das Bockbier Dunkel is, of course, a doppelbock or double bock. It has an alcohol content of 6.7% by volume and I paid $3.99 for my half liter can from Betty’s Country Store in Helen, Georgia. There is no freshness dating on it.
As a historical note, Otto von Bismarck was not known in his day as a beer enthusiast, and is more well known as a wine and champagne drinker. Perhaps this brand might be better named for Kaiser Wilhem II, who once said “Give me a woman who truly loves beer, and I shall conquer the world.”
Bismarkbrau Das Bockbier Dunkel pours to a dark mahogany color with a thick fluffy tan head and a nose of toasted nuts and Munich malt. Taking a sip, the beer is medium in body, perhaps a tad more, toasty nutty with hints of molasses, a hint of chocolate and decocted Munich malt goodness. It finishes dry with a kiss of gentle bitter hops and warming alcohol.
This was very tasty, and I would certainly buy it again. I have only ever seen it in Helen, so I will be sure to pick up more this fall when I am there again for Oktoberfest.
Glad I tried it?

Would I rebuy it??
