Dry County Old 41 with Coffee and Cinnamon

Review Date 2/22/2020   By John Staradumsky

It was a bleak, dreary, rainy Sunday. So, what to do? Easy! Go to a brewery! And you know I did. I took a ride down I-575 to Kennesaw and dropped by the Dry County Brewing Company. The brewery says on their website:

IF YOU LIVE IN A DRY COUNTY AND YOU WANT A BEER, YOU ARE OUT OF LUCK... UNLESS YOU WANT IT BAD ENOUGH, THEN YOU MAKE A "BEER RUN".

Now, I live in Cherokee County, which is not a dry county, but hey, these guys are so good, I made a beer un anyway. New breweries open here in Georgia on a regular basis, but Dry County remains among what I consider the top tier of Georgia breweries.

The first beer was free! Dry County was the beer of the month at Taco Mac in December of 2019, and one fine Thursday night one of the brewery reps was onsite passing out free drink cards to be redeemed on a future brewery visit. Today was the day! I enjoyed my free beer, had another paid ones, bought a bottle of White Chocolate Stout to go, and also a growler fill of the beer I’m here to tell you about today, Old 41 Stout with Coffee and Cinnamon.

Here’s what Dry County says about the base beer, Old 41 Stout:

Old 41 is our 2018 Gold Medal winning World Beer Cup® Oatmeal Stout, which takes its name from the road running through our hometown! Old 41 features hints of rich chocolate accentuated by a creamy, smooth finish to create perfect balance in this full-bodied yet easy to drink oatmeal stout!

They give these ingredients:

Malts: North American 2-Row, Flakes Oats,Malted Oats, English Chocolate Malts, Crystal 65

Hops: Magnum

Yeast: California Ale Yeast

Add to that some cinnamon and coffee and boom! You have Dry County Old 41 Oatmeal Stout with Coffee and Cinnamon. The beer has an alcohol content of 5.9% by volume with 29 IBUs. I paid $20 for a 64-ounce growler fill. I thought the price was odd in that it was exactly the price of 4 pints at the brewery. Usually a growler to go is a little less. But hell, they gave me a free beer, what more can you ask?

Dry County Old 41 Oatmeal Stout with Coffee and Cinnamon pours to a jet black color with a totally hot ball cinnamon nose and a thick creamy tan head. Taking a sip, the beer is medium in body and again dominated with the hot ball cinnamon (I love cinnamon!), but here notes of chocolate and coffee come out and work perfectly with the spice. The cinnamon and oatmeal remind me of an oatmeal cookie, too, and how wonderful is that? The finish is a little roasty and a lot spicy, and this one screams cinnamon to the last drop. Delicious!

This is a variant and won’t be a beer that’s on all the time. But if you happen to find yourself at Dry County and they do have it on tap, don’t miss it.

And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
