Kennesaw, Georgia’s Dry County Brewery remains one of the most mysterious in the state. At least, their beers are mysterious. They brew a number of different one across various styles, but rarely post information on them to their website. If you go there, you will find only rudimentary information on four beers:
Noonday Extra Pale Ale
Old 41 Oatmeal Stout
Namesake American Session Ale
Recently, I saw Dry County Chocolate Porter on the draft list at Stout’s Growlers here in Canton. I had just recently enjoyed their delicious Dry County KBA (Kennesaw Bourbon Ale), so the Chocolate Porter intrigued. I bought a crowler to take home for $8.75. The beer was listed as 6% alcohol by volume. They make (or have made) a variant aged in Lazy Guy Distillery bourbon barrels and infused with Thrasher cold brew coffee. I will look for that.
Dry County Chocolate Porter pours to a jet-black color with a thick creamy head and a rich roasty dark chocolate nose. Taking a sip, the beer has a medium smooth body appropriate to a porter and packed full with dark roasty malt. There are notes of rich chocolate pudding with the skins on top, just like your mom used to make. The beer finishes dry roasty.
A bit more body and this would be perfect, but it’s wonderful however you pour it.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
