I’ve always loved Dogfish Head Chicory Stout. That said, I am surprised I don’t drink it more often.Such is the rub with being a beer enthusiast; we often eschew the old standbys in favor of the new and untried. Not always, though, and when I saw a display of Dogfish head Chicory Stout at my local Bullocks Liquors in Woodstock, GA for just $3.99 a 4-pack, I decided the time was right to revisit this old friend. And so I did, and I’ll get to that shortly, but first a bit about the beer. Obviously this is a stout, a coffee/chicory stout to be precise. Chicory is of course a coffee substitute, or more precisely its roots are when roasted just as coffee beans are. Some prefer its slightly different taste in its own right. Dogfish Head Chicory Stout was one of the very first beers I enjoyed from this Dover, Delaware brewer. That makes sense when you read this blurb from the Dogfish Head website: Chicory was one of the first beers we started brewing at our pub back when it opened in 1995. It's a dark beer made with a bunch of roasted chicory, organic Mexican coffee, St. John's Wort and licorice root. We use whole-leaf Cascade and Fuggle hops, as well as pale, roasted and oatmeal grains. Dogfish also says the beer is now draft only, though I’m not sure if that’s true since I just bought these bottles. There is no freshness dating on the beer I bought. Anyway, the beer has an alcohol content of 5.2% by volume and 21 IBUs. Dogfish Head Chicory Stout pours to a jet black color with a very thick head of rocky tan foam and a sinfully coffeeish nose. Taking a sip, this beer is a little thinner in body than I would like (and always has been), but it makes up for that in the flavor department. Dark bitter chocolate, chocolate pudding, and especially roasty coffee and chicory are all of the place in this one. Dogfish head Chicory Stout is a lot like a cup of black coffee in many, many ways. Except its beer, so its better. However you find it, on tap or in bottles, Dogfish Head Chicory Stout is a classic craft brew and a roasty treat not to be missed. Try pairing with tiramisu for a delightful dessert treat that shouldn’t keep you up all night. Even better at the bargain price I scored it at.
