Campfire Amplifier |

So this happened. Last fall, my daughter Jessica and her faithful sidekick Chris Henson bought me a bottle of Dogfish Head Campfire Amplifier, and I lost it. Luckily I lost it in my garage beer fridge, so when I found it again in April it was ready to go and well preserved. Not that a stout like this would not have been well preserved even if I hadn’t lost it in the fridge (it may or may not have been), but refrigerated beers do last longer. This is, of course, a s’mores themed beer, based upon a milk stout. Dogfish Head says on their website: Break out the s'mores fixin's - there's a new brew in town! Inspired by cold nights around the campfire, this milk stout is brewed with marshmallows, graham crackers, cocoa nibs, cinnamon, Madagascar vanilla beans and smoked malt. The only thing missing is a tent, and a few fireside ghost stories. Dogfish Head Campfire Amplifier has an alcohol content of 6.5% with 35 IBUs. Like most Dogfish beers, this is way overpriced at $14.99 a six-pack at Total Wine. Dogfish Head Campfire Amplifier pours to a jet-black color with a thick creamy tan head and a luscious nose of marshmallow and cinnamon. Taking a sip, the beer is medium to full in body, gently smoky, with generous notes of powdered cocoa, burnt marshmallow thanks to the roast, spicy cinnamon, and hints of graham cracker goodness. Finishes gently roasty. I did enjoy this beer, it hits the theme of s’mores over a campfire better than most examples thanks to the smoked malt, though I have had others with more graham cracker flavor. A solid four stars for me, less a half star for the overpricing. That said, I would definitely buy it again. And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box. *Pricing data accurate at time of review or latest update. For reference only, based on actual price paid by reviewer.
