After
finishing our drinks and offering promises to the bartender and waitress that
we would return before the night was through, we tramped off to 18th and Cherry
and finally located Dock Street. It was a good walk from where we had parked,
so I ordered a beer sampler and a large glass of ice water to avoid dehydration.
The first beer I tried was a sweet, malty scotch ale. Not as rich or smoky as some
examples of the style I've sampled, but still a good attempt. The Bohemian
pilsner was next, it seemed a bit more ale-like to me than the bottled version,
though still with a good hop finish. The Illuminator Bock was rich, sweet and delicious,
an Irish Stout was roasty with hints of licorice and a good hop bite, and a Wit
seemed to lack the spices requisite in the style. The star of Dock Street's
selection was a magnificent helles bock. This beer was light in body but rich
in malt flavor, sweet and warming from the close to 7% ABV. I ordered a glass
of this beer to accompany our order of Trio Fries for which Dock Street is so
famous, an interesting combination of fried
leeks and white and sweet potatoes. A
heaping basket was a real bargain at $5, more than enough for two people to
share.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
