Dock Street Britannic Brown

Review Date 4/26/2000 By John Staradumsky

Henry Ortlieb's Original Dock Street Brewing Company, Philadelphia, PA.

My first taste of this rather elusive beer came at the brewpub/brewery in Philadelphia a few weeks ago. I immediately fell in love with this soft malty delight. Slightly nutty and malty-sweet, this is a beer one could easily sip all day, perhaps at the bar , perhaps on one's own front porch whiling away the hours. It wasn't readily available in bottles (not at the brewery, nor at five different PA beer distributors, or at several NJ liquor retailers). I did manage to locate one single bottle at a NJ store however, and I'm drinking that bottle now.

Dark ruby to light brown color, light creamy head formation, buttery-malty nose. There is noticeable and agreeable diacetyl here, along with a pronounced hazelnut character. Soft, slightly sweet maltiness, medium body, sweet, malty finish, and an emerging bitterness. A wonderful brown ale with character.

And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
