I'm just reminiscing on this one, folks. Devil Mountain ales were originally brewed in the early to mid nineties in Benica, Califonia. Around 1996 they closed their brewery and switched to contract brewing at Boston Beer's facility in Cincinnati, Ohio.
I managed to sample a number of brews from Devil Mountain:
Devil's Brew Porter Devil Mountain Black Honey Ale Devil Mountain Five Malt Ale Devil Mountain Mountain Honey Wheat Devil Mountain Railroad Gold Devil Mountain Summer Mountain Brew Devil Mountain Tasmanian Pale Ale
I wrote the following about their beers in November of 1996:
All of the beers I tried from Devil Mountain were flavorful. Unfortunately, it seems the brewery got lost in the shuffle of new micros. The new Devil Mountain is a contract, brewed at Schoenling in Cinncinati, and owned by Seagram if I'm not mistaken. They are brewed by one of Boston Beer's brewmasters. I was impressed by both the Five Malt and the Black Honey at the recent RI Beer Expo, and I'll definitely be buying both of these beers.
When it was available, I drank lots of this one, both from the original brewery and later, the contract-brewed version. Five Malt Ale was remarkable for its medium dark malty character and balancing hop finish. It was the malt that really made the beer, however. Very drinkable and flavorful, it's a shame it's no longer available, though New Belgium's 1554 Enlightenment Ale seems to remind me of it.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
