During my vacation in Hawaii, almost every beer I drank was brewed there. I like to sample the local stuff, you see, wherever I go and whenever I can. One beer, however, had the honor of being the only non-Hawaiian brew to pass these lips: Deschutes Fresh Squeezed IPA. Now, I was a big fan of Deschutes in the 90s, and drank such lovely beers as their Mirror Pond Pale Ale and Black Butte Porter with much alacrity.
We never got Deschutes beers in Rhode Island and I’ve never seen them in Georgia, either, so I pounced on Fresh Squeezed IPA when I saw it on the draft menu. Deschutes is expanding, building a brewery in Roanoke, Virginia, but it is not expected to open before 2021. A tasting room is planned there sometime this year. So, Deschutes beers should be available in Georgia eventually, but for now I’ll enjoy my glass of Fresh Squeezed IPA.
From the website:
A juicy citrus and grapefruit flavor profile. As if fresh Citra and Mosaic hops were squeezed straight into the bottle. Don’t worry, no fruit was harmed in the making of this beer.
Ingredients from the website:
Malt Pale, Crystal, Munich
Hops Citra, Mosaic, Nugget
Deschutes Fresh Squeezed IPA has an alcohol content of % by volume with 60 IBUs. I paid $8 for a pint at Kimo’s restaurant in Lahaina, where I enjoyed it with their fish and chips: Maui Brewing Co. Bikini Blonde Lager battered, house made tartar sauce, apple cider mustard coleslaw ($14).
Just as I was snapping a photo of my beautiful wife, my server popped a pint of Deschutes Fresh Squeezed IPA into the frame. The beer is deep orange amber in color with a light fluffy head and Lemon zest and orange in the nose, orange pulp and grapefruit peel in the palate, solid malt base and a long dry bitter finish. It is really juicy and explodes with delicious citrus flavors.
It was nice to be able to enjoy a Deschutes beer again after so long. Looks like I made the right choice for that one non-Hawaiian beer.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
