Three Mile Citra Hopped Berliner Weisse

Review Date 9/13/2017  By John Staradumsky

Here’s a new brewery from North Carolina: Currahee of Franklin. They only began to keg and can last year, andtheir beers just started showing up in Georgia. That’s a pretty impressive time to our market actually, and speaks well of the size of their operation and business plan. There are many more North Carolina brewers that are not yet in the Georgia market. Clearly, though, Currahee has a Georgia connection, as the brewery is named for the Cherokee word that means “stand alone”. Currahee Mountain is a famous attraction in Georgia near Toccoa, and the phrase “three miles up, three miles down”, often said of Currahee Mountain, is on the side of Currahee beer labels.

The first beer I tried from Currahee was their Three Mile Citra Hopped Berliner Weisse. I picked up a six-pack at Target oddly enough. It’s a sign of the maturity of craft beer love that our Canton Target now has an excellent craft beer section. Three Mile Citra Hopped Berliner Weisse is not mentioned on the Currahee website, but here is a little background on the brewery they do talk about:

Founded in 2015, we opened the doors of Currahee Brewing Company's 9,000-square-foot production and canning facility in 2016. We are proud to call Western North Carolina, more specifically the town of Franklin, North Carolina, our home.

We built the brewery with beer aficionados in mind and invite guests to experience our nearly 2,000-square-foot tasting room and outdoor, German-inspired biergarten that overlooks the beautiful Little Tennessee River. Our brewing operations consist of an American-made 15-barrel brewhouse, 30 Bbl and 60 Bbl fermentation vessels, and a variety of wine and spirits barrels and Foeders, for aging and souring purposes.

Currahee Three Mile Citra Hopped Berliner Weisse has an alcohol content of 4.3% by volume, which is about 1.3% higher than it should be for the style. I paid $9.49 for my six-pack at Target, not bad these days. On the label, Currahee calls this beer a "German-Style Tart Ale".

Currahee Three Mile Citra Hopped Berliner Weisse. pours to a hazy yellow color with a medium sized short lived spritzy head and a slightly tart wheaty nose. Taking a sip, the beer has lots of crackery wheat up front with a gentle, acidic dry sourness progressing and intensifying into the finish. The citra hops add an almost lemony note to the beer, and I like it a lot. I would like more tartness, as this has a tartness, but not a tarty tart tartness. And less alcohol would be nice too, but I’m hard to please. The lemony citras are growing on me though, and this is a great beer on the patio while barbecuing.

I liked it well enough that I went back to Target and bought a six-pack on their Frankenstark the next day. More on that to follow….

And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
