Blutsbrüder German Style Munich Dunkel

Review Date 11/14/2020  By John Staradumsky

Welcome, friends, to my third ever beer from Creative Creature brewing of El Cajon, California: Blutsbrüder German Style Munich Dunkel. Interestingly, two of the three have been collaborations with other brewers new to me. My very first Creative Creature beer, Bockslasher Doppelbock, was a collab brew with Southnorte Beer Company. This time, Creative Creature teams up with Mission Brewery of San Diego.

It’s nice to see small brewers working together on projects such as this one. I found no information on the website of either brewery regarding this beer. Other than the style, I only know that it has an alcohol content of 5% by volume, and that Blutsbrüder is German for blood brother. I can, however, pop open my can and let you know what I think of the beer. I think I’ll do that little thing.

Blutsbrüder German Style Munich Dunkel pours to a deep caramel color with a very thick fluffy head and a nose of caramel and toasted malts. Taking a sip, the body is firm with caramel malt and toffee, toasted nuts, and finishes gently bitter with herbal hops.

This is an interesting beer. A Munich Dunkel should be darker and perhaps slightly coffeeish. This beer is more like a Marzen to me with its nutty maltiness. How to rate it? I will give it 4 stars hedonistically because I enjoyed it, less a star off for a total miss on the style. For my purposes I will lump it into the Marzen/Vienna Lager category here on guruofbrew.com, and add that I would buy it again because, well, I enjoyed it.

And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
