Royal Standard Wee Heavy

Review Date 12/26/2020   By John Staradumsky

I just popped my can of Royal Standard Wee Heavy Ale out of my Clown Shoes 12 Beers of Christmas sampler, and I got a beer that wasn’t exactly what I was expecting. It was a little lighter in color (just a little) and flavor than I am used to in a Scotch Ale/Wee Heavy. Still, after a few sips I was hooked and the veautiful malty notes shone through nicely here.

Clown Shoes says:

Malty, creamy, and moderately sweet, we brewed this Wee Heavy with Scottish Golden Promise barley malt to add a deep fullness and a hint herbal/floral tenderness.

It’s the light and fluffy Golden Promise malt that ssteals the show here, and while there are certainly other malts at play, this one is the base malt and adds some delightful biscuity notes upon which the classic Wee Heavy toffee and treacle are layered.

Clown Shoes Royal Standard Wee Heavy has an alcohol content of 8% by volume, and I paid $30.99 for my sampler, though I saw it later at Sherlock’s for six bucks less. This beer is only available in the 12 Beers of Christmas Mix Pack for 2020. My can is stamped as best by 1/1/22.

Clown Shoes Royal Standard Wee Heavy pours to a hazy russet color with a sweet malt and juicy fruit nose and a medium creamy head. Taking a sip, the beer is lightly malty, with a biscuity maltiness from the Golden Promise but rich notes of caramel, treacle, and toffee, too. The hops are flowery and herbal and just a wee bit bitter in the finish, where a pleasant alcohol warmth flows over the tongue.

Where would I rate this one in the 12-pack so far? I just love a nice malty ale, so judged to style but also hedonistically it will displace Space Cake DIP in the number two slot, with Clown Shoes Pecan Pie Porter remaining the champion beer so far.
