If you missed the Clown Shoes 12 Beers of Christmas sampler this year, more’s the pity. As I’ve been working my way through it in the order suggested by the brewery, the beers just seem to be getting better and better. Hence we come to my favorite yet so far (and that’s saying something): Clown Shoes Eagle Claw Fist IPA. I have enjoyed many a Clown Shoes brew over the years, but I’ve never tried this one before. That said, it’s not a new beer. It might be prudent to let Clown Shoes elaborate at this point. Eagle Claw Fist was a part of our core lineup in the early days as a punchy Imperial Amber Ale. It was one of our favorites and we’ve missed it ever since it was retired. We finally found an excuse (our 10th Anniversary!) to dust off the recipe and update it for 2019 with a more expressive, modern hop bill that balances strong malt flavors with notes of citrus, pine, and a touch of resin. Pick up a 4-pack and start brushing up on your Clown Shoes Kung Fu. Ingredient from the website: Caramel and Black Malt, Columbus, Simcoe, Citra and Centennial Hops. Clown Shoes Eagle Claw Fist IPA has an alcohol content of 8% by volume, and I paid $30.99 for the sampler. I later saw it at Sherlocks for six bucks less. My can is stamped as Best by 01/31/21. Clown Shoes Eagle Claw Fist IPA pours to a muddy reddish brown color with a thick creamy tan head and an intense resiny-piney nose. Taking a sip, the beer is medium to full in body with rich caramel, toasted nuts, and stewed malts. Might this be an Imperial red ale, or a red IPA? Possibly. Sipping again, there’s a bit of citrusy grapefruit, and intense sticky resiny pine tar that is knocking this one out of the park out of the park for me. I miss beers like this, and the resin and pine here make this a full 5-star beer in my book, and the best beer in the pack so far. Which is definitely sating something. Bring this back Clown Shoes!
