I just love Thursday nights at Taco Mac. OK, if you read my reviews on anything approaching a regular basis, you know that Thursday night is pint glass night at Taco Mac. That means that each Thursday night you get a free logo pint glass if you buy any one of the (usually) three beers of the month. For February, 2014 the Beer of the Month is from Cisco, hence the fact that tonight I’m drinking a Cisco Grey Lady Ale.
I have to say that as beer glasses go (and as one who collects them I should know), the glasses offered this month from this Nantucket, Massachusetts brewer are really something special. Just check out the picture of them featured here and you’ll see what I mean. That said, the beer I selected tonight isn’t bad either, as we’ll soon see.
Here’s what Cisco says about Grey Lady Ale:
Named for the often foggy island where it is brewed. This wheat beer is fermented with Belgian yeast and brewed with fresh fruit and spices. A unique ale that emits a complex, earthy nose and a soft, mid-palate maltiness with hints of tropical fruit. Dry and spicy.
Cisco Grey Lady Ale is quite moderate in alcohol at just 4% by volume, making this a true session beer. I paid $6.00 for a 20-ounce mug of the stuff, but you can get it in six-packs, too.
Cisco Grey Lady Ale pours to a pale yellow color with a medium sized head spritzy head and a bountiful aromas of coriander and citrus in the nose. Taking a sip, the beer is immediately tart and refreshing with crisp wheat in the palate. Strong notes of bitter citrus peel and coriander emerge very quickly, all leading into a tart, quenching finish.
A good wit always reminds me of eating good quality bologna, and it should since they are both spiced with coriander. Too many wits these days lack enough spice, but this one most certainly does not. Indeed, the spices here are bold and assertive, bright citrusy and pungent, and stood up most nicely to my order of Taco Mac’s famous hot wings.
Well done, Cisco! Grey Lady Ale is a winner for sure.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
