Cookies! Who doesn’t love cookies? I know I do. Even in my beer, I love cookies. Not literally of course, but hey, a good and classic brown ale will frequently have a solid cookie-like maltiness not unlike a chocolate chip cookie. What if we add oatmeal? Oatmeal and beer are longtime friends. And maybe some raisin? Some yeasts throw off a dark fruity raisiny flavor you know. Can we have an oatmeal cookie beer?
We can indeed, and Cigar City Brewing of Tampa, Florida has given us just that with their Oatmeal Raisin Cookie Brown Ale. Cigar City uses ingredients more traditional to the cookie than the beer, but in these days of everything but the kitchen sink (and I’m waiting for someone to add one of those) in your beer, why not? In this case, the results are delicious.
From the can label:
The addition of raisins, cinnamon, and milk sugar to our full-bodied and chocolatey Brown Ale base creates a unique beer that tastes exactly like it was pulled out of Grandma's oven.
That brown ale, of course, is Cigar City Maduro Brown Ale.
Cigar City Oatmeal Raisin Cookie Brown Ale has an alcohol content of 5.5% by volume with 25 IBUs. I paid $9.98 for a 4-pack at Sherlock’s. I think they could give us two more cans for that price, and a half star off for that. My cans are stamped as canned on 4/03/18 and I drank this one on April 29th.
Cigar City Oatmeal Raisin Cookie Brown Ale pours to a dark brownish black color with a thick creamy rocky head and a dark malty and cinnamon nose. Taking a sip, the beer has a medium to full body with doughy malty cookie notes, a hint of chocolate, dark fruity raisin and spicy cinnamon. The beer finishes dry with cinnamon spice too. Just like an oatmeal raisin cookie!
Cigar City hit the theme they were going for here, and I really enjoyed this beer. I think you will too, so give it a try. Grandma says you can have two.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
