Hey there, Cherry Street Brewing Company of Cumming, Georgia! Happy Fifth Anniversary to you! I’m a big fan of your beers and have been drinking them for, oh, about five years now. The first Cherry Street beer I reviewed was West LA Hopaway IPA, back in September of 2013, so see? About 5 years now.
The other day, I saw a first at Target: a bottled Cherry Street beer. It was their 5th Anniversary brew, Oasis Anniversary Blend Russian Imperial Stout. It was also $14.24 for a half liter bottle, which is ridiculous. Total Wine sells it for $18.99 a bottle, even more ridiculous. They both have some left at that price; I passed.
So, I had still only ever had Cherry Street beers on draft. About a week later, though, I saw another Cherry Street beer at Target: Steppin’ Razor Double Dry Hopped IPA. This was a little more reasonable, so I picked some up and I’m here to tell you about it.
This is a double/imperial IPA of strength 8% by volume with 50 IBUs. The latter is on the low end for an imperial IPA, which denotes a lower malt presence. Hops used are Simcoe, Mosaic and Citra. I paid $11.39 for a 4-pack of 16 ounce cans at Target.
Cherry Street Steppin’ Razor Double Dry Hopped pours to a hazy orange color with a thick head of foam and robust passion fruit and more pineapple in the nose. There is some citrus, too. Taking a sip, the beer has a medium malt body with more of the tropical fruit and zesty grapefruit pith and peel, all leading into a bitter herbal hop bitterness.
I liked this beer, it reminded me of a double IPA in the current fad New England IPA style. It was very drinkable and did not seem its 8% strength. I enjoyed a can of Cherry Street Steppin’ Razor Double Dry Hopped directly after a can of Samuel Adams New England IPA. The Steppin’ Razor was not as juicy as the Samuel Adams beer, but was similar in other respects.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
