Well hello there, Central Waters Brewing of Amherst, Wisconsin. I don’t think I’ve ever met you before. In fact, I have not, as I don’t see any beers from you listed on my database of beers tasted. I have seen some positive feedback on your bees on Untappd, though, and hey, you are from Wisconsin. They sure know their beer in Wisconsin. So, when I saw your Mudpuppy Porter for sale at Half Time Beverage, I grabbed a can.

I do love a good porter, and it is refreshing to see such beers in a world of 50 million hazy IPAs. Central Waters, though, has been around for 26 years and seems to know what they are doing. So they brew a porter. Of course they do. And of this porter they say:

A robust, yet surprisingly refreshing porter, Mud Puppy is a favorite of dark beer lovers. Characterized by a thick, rocky head and luscious chocolate-like nose, the malty profile is balanced by liberal hopping for its style.

Ingredients from the website:

HOP VARIETIES: Cascade, Northern Brewer

MALTS: Caramel, Chocolate

Central Waters Mudpuppy Porter has an alcohol content of 5.6% by volume with 50 IBUs. I paid $2.99 for my can from Half Time. Total Wine sells it for an amazing $8.49 a six-pack in Greenfield, Wisconsin, and better yet, you can get a 12-pack for just $14.99. That’s an amazinmg deal these days. My can is stamped CANNED ON 07/20/23.

Central Waters Mudpuppy Porter pours to a dark brownish color with a thick creamy tan head and a nose of dark powdered cocoa. Taking a sip, the beer is medium in body, appropriate I think to a brown porter. It’s lightly roasty, toasty nutty, and bursting with fresh cracked malty flavors. There are hints of brown sugar and more of the cocoa the nose promised. The beer finishes roasty-balanced and dry.

Truly a delicious porter, I give it 4 stars for style with an extra star tacked on for the bargain basement price.

Glad I tried it?  T

Would I rebuy it??
