Cedar Creek Dankosauras IPA has arrived at Taco Mac! I’ve yet to see any Cedar Creek beers in cans or bottles at my local liquor stores, but Taco Mac has kegs of the interestingly named IPA from this Seven Points, Texas brewer. I say interesting because the Oxford dictionary defines dank as disagreeably damp, musty, and typically cold. Well, you could say that this beer is damp and is often served cold, but it wasn’t very musty to me.
There was a dinosaur called dakosauras once, but I don’t think he drank beer. I do though, and I like Cedar Creek Dankosauras for reasons we will cover soon. It seems to be highly popular amongst beer geeks (it has gotten high marks in Honest Craft Beer Reviews, what more proof do you need?). I hope to see more beers from this brewery soon.
From the website:
Who doesn’t love a great IPA? The secret of this brew is that we used actual dinosaur bones. Okay, that was a lie. But we did throw in enough hops to bury a Brontosaurus.
Inspired by some of our favorite West Coast IPAs, the bold pine, citrus, peach, and tangerine hop flavors, along with a clean bitterness are balanced by a velvety malt backbone. This beautiful blend of flavor and drinkability showcases the truly unique Eureka hop which we find to be delightfully juicy and dank. You don’t need tiny arms and a huge head to enjoy this mammoth IPA!
Ingredients from the same place:
Hops - Apollo, Bravo, Eureka
Malts - US 2-Row, German Munich
Cedar Creek Dankosauras IPA has an alcohol content of 6.8% by volume with 68 IBUs. I wouldn’t exactly call it mammoth with those stats, but hey whatever floats their boat. I was disappointed that the beer was served in an 11-ounce glass, but the blow was softened by the $5.50 price.
Cedar Creek Dankosauras IPA arrived a bright orange amber color with a thin creamy head of foam and bright lemongrass in the nose. Taking a sip, I got a medium caramel maltiness up front followed by bright citrus and grassy hop aromas and flavors that scream again lemongrass, resin and pine and a respectable bitterness to round it all out. At first, the fruit flavors promised did not come out so much, but a little passion fruit did come out as the beer warms.
All in all, a very well done IPA that I found very enjoyable. I’ll be looking for it again to be sure.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
