Well whataya know. Every time I turn around, there’s Sweden. Donald Trump started the whole thing one fine Saturday, when he said “you look at what's happening last night in Sweden, Sweden, who would believe this?". Except, of course, nothing of consequence had happened in Sweden the night before, and the Swedes were the first to correct him on this.
A week or so later, my brother got back the DNA results he had been awaiting from ancestry.com and who knew? A 30% match came in for Scandinavian blood within a Swedish/Norwegian area. Trump was calling out my people! Finally, just for good measure, I came across Mr. Candy King, a Berliner Weiss style beer with raspberry and lime, at the Brick Store Pub in Decatur, Georgia. We may never know what Trump thought was going on in Sweden, but I can assure you that whenever Mr. Candy King is around, Sweden will be going in me.
Swedish beers are not all that common here in America. I haven’t seen my favorite, Carnegie Porter, in ages. It’s made by Carlsberg of Denmark now anyway. We do get beers from Nils Oscar and Oppigards , but that’s about it. So this was welcome.
Brewski Mr. Candy King has an alcohol content of 4.8% by volume (high for the style) and I paid $7 for a 12-ounce glass. The Brewski website is lacking in information, and if you click on the “Beers” section, it just takes you to Untappd. I think the Russians are behind that.
My glass of Brewski Mr. Candy King arrived a bright reddish pink color with a thick fizzy head and tart berry fruit in the nose. Taking a sip, the beer has the puckering sourness I want in the style with luscious Raspberry fruit and a hint of lime. I’m just loving the tart tarty tartness in the finish (don't use that I am trademarking it).
A very nice beer indeed, aside from the lime it’s a lot like a Berliner Weiss mit Schuss , the raspberry kind. The lime adds an additional dimension and hey, it works.
Pair it perhaps with Swedish Fish candy?
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
