Well my friends, here’s another first for me. As far as I can recall, I’ve never had a Belgian style abbey dubbel from a can. Until now, that is. That’s because I just popped a can of The Brewers Art Resurrection. Craft cans are becoming increasingly popular these days, so I suppose it’s only a matter of time before we see every possible style sold in this packaging. In fact, if you head on over and visit the fine folks at Craftcans.com, you can see that today there are 1532 different craft beers from 423 breweries in 93 different styles being canned in America today.
The Brewers Art is a brewpub in Baltimore, Maryland, and Resurrection is actually one of their most popular brews. They don’t actually can it themselves at the brewpub, but instead contract same out to Sly Fox Brewing in Royersford, Pennsylvania. Brewers Art has this to say about Resurrection on their website:
The seven percent solution. A delightfully full-bodied yet easy to drink abbey brown ale that has become our flagship brand, thanks to Baltimore's loyalty.
Brewers Art Resurrection has an alcohol content of 7% by volume and is not sold here in Georgia, but I was able to procure a can through the efforts of the very gracious Chuck Triplett. As to the name, the story goes that on the first attempt to brew this style at Brewers Art fermentation died out and had to be resurrected. So there you go.
The Brewers Art Resurrection pour to a murky brown color with a thick creamy foam head and a sinfully enticing nose of light chocolate and toasted nuts. Taking a sip, I get some wonderful sweet cookieish malt notes sprinkled with toasted nuts and light chocolate I want in this style, all merging nicely with some light funky yeast notes and brown sugar. The finish has a touch of warming alcohol and gentle grassy herbal hop bitterness. As it warms even more of the bitterness comes out along with a hint of anise. I could drink this all day......
So, this the very first Belgian style dubbel I've ever had from a can passes the test and receives the Bruguru seal of approval. I think I might like a touch more funky yeast flavor, but I just loved the luscious dark malt notes here.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
