Stopped by this brewpub in Braintree, Massachusetts yesterday for a late lunch and a few beers. I like this location, it's just off of Route 93 in a shopping mall plaza, with ample parking and no need to fight downtown traffic. When I got inside I began taking some pictures with my digital camera, and brewer Scott Brunelle came over and we began talking. He's an outgoing, very friendly guy and he brews some fantastic beer, he was also nice enough to pick up the tab for the beer I drank. I also got to talk with his assistant brewer John, another friendly and outgoing guy, more than happy to talk beer and very knowledgeable about it.
The atmosphere here is charming, modern looking, shiny, clean and colorful with brewing themes scattered throughout. The menu is outstanding, I was hard-pressed to make a decision but settled on a cup of the jalapeno corn chowder and a grilled portabello sandwich. The chowder was a meal in itself along with the mini-loaf of fresh baked bread that was served alongside it. Mildly spicy and chock full of corn and green and red peppers, it went extremely well with Improper Hopper IPA. The sandwich was delicious too, thick and well seasoned, a good match for the crisp Munich Gold.
Improper Hopper-Orange-red color, generous head formation, big flowery Cascade nose, firm malt backbone and rich mouthfeel yield to more floral hoppiness in the palate, lingering bitter finish. Absolutely wonderful beer, I actually judged this beer at the beer competition at the Great Northeast International Beer Expo last year and chose it as one of the winners. I brought home a beautiful swingtop growler of this beer, it was probably my favorite of all the great beers on tap at Brewmoon. A cask version was also on, this was a slightly mellower, softer version of the above.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
